welcome to the we provide training courses to members of the public, to those working with rodents and to veterinary professionals with the aim of improving rodent and guinea pig medical care and welfare. the rodent health advisory course (rha) is the most important part of a rodentologist’s training. it provides all the basic information that is needed to provide your guinea pigs with the best opportunity to live a long and healthy life. additionally it provides you with the information and tools that you need to recognise the onset of ill health and disease at the earliest possible stage. the metabolic rate of rodents is very fast compared to that of cats and dogs, so early identification of any changes in your guinea pigs’ behaviour or health is essential. qualified rodentologists fill the gap in veterinary training, which is based mainly on cats, dogs and farm animals and does not include a specific study or examination on naturally occurring disease within the rodent/guinea pig species. it will therefore be helpful when consulting a vet if you can provide as much knowledge and information yourself as possible. these days, many veterinary practices do have a qualified rodentologist within their staff, often a vet nurse who has trained with us, but it is wise to establish if this is the case before booking an appointment with a practice. details of the courses are shown below. part of the rha course is a two day residential training at the cambridge cavy trust/cct (see their website: www.cambridgecavytrust.org.uk) in huntingdon, just north of cambridge, uk. this residential stay may be completed in either two consecutive days or on two separate occasions. basic accommodation is available if required. students of the residential stay will need to bring two guinea pigs of their own, preferably one male and one female, although two of the same sex will be acceptable. there are a limited number of training places available so early booking is advised. when you are ready to book the practical stage of the course, please text vedra stanley-spatcher on 07721 026401 to request a residential booking, and she will be in contact with you after 8pm (gmt) to discuss availability. the training courses in terms of animal welfare and general veterinary knowledge, the rha course is the most important training pack. you cannot undertake the gbar course until you have successfully completed the rha course. rodent health advisory (rha) no formal qualifications are required to undertake this course. you decide the pace at which you choose to study. the examination papers can be completed at home and posted to us for marking. consists of: rha home study materials – £130 2 days training at the cct – £80 each (10am to 4pm) case history examination (set of 16 case histories) – £20 examination marking fee – £40 rha badge – £20 (only available upon successful completion of the course and exams) total fee: £370 optional (but recommended): 2 workshops, held on sundays only (11am to 2pm) – £60 each 2 lectures, held on sundays only (11am to 2pm) – £40 each if you wish to continue and undertake more academic study, we can offer a choice of the following gbar (graduate of the ) home study packs: anatomy gbar (part 1) consists of: home study materials – £135 10-module examination pack registration fee – £20 examination
